It is also useful to establish if the individual you are seeking was a member of a profession or trade. Many of the sources in the National Archives date from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century, but other sources such as church records or civil registration records may be helpful. It is also useful for locating an individual who may have moved to a different part of the country. ![]() Information about when a person left Ireland is vital to determining the kind of records they are likely to be found in. Gather information from family sources including letters or official documents, such as passports, which can provide useful information about the spelling of a family name, maiden names of married women, what county, parish or townland the individual came from and when they left Ireland and where they emigrated to. We would strongly advise researchers to begin their search by collecting basic facts about the individual or family they are interested in. Often researchers visit the National Archives without undertaking any secondary research on the individual or family they are looking for. Have you undertaken any background research? A number of our collections, including Commissioners of National Education, the Ordnance Survey and Valuation Office, are particularly useful for local history research as they contain archives relating to practically every part of Ireland. Our collections are particularly useful for anyone interested in researching the political, social and economic development of Ireland from the 18th century to the present day. The National Archives also holds a number of private collections, including business records, some landed estate collections and private donations. These include archives of the British administration in Ireland from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, the largest collection of which is the Registered Papers of the Chief Secretary’s Office. The National Archives hold records of the modern Irish state from its foundation to approximately 1987, as well as a number of other major collections acquired as a result to the amalgamation of the Public Record Office of Ireland and the State Paper Office in 1986 when the National Archives was established. Researching family history What are you hoping to discover?Īre you interested in finding out more about your family history or are you looking for a very specific document relating to an individual, such as a will? Oscars 2023: Best Supporting Actor Predictions 'Scream VI' Review: Ghostface Takes Manhattan as This Slasher Franchise Finds Its Footing Again But scenes set elsewhere are curiously murky, as if the sheer extent of the corruption has manifested itself as some kind of dissolute smog.New Movies: Release Calendar for March 10, Plus Where to Watch the Latest Films The casino location is effective – it’s a tawdry, teaming flesh pot of oblivious punters. Performances are equally unsubtle Foxx does a lot of steering-wheel pounding and wall-punching. Swiss director Baran bo Odar leans heavily on bone-crunching sound design and a percussive score which rumbles over the film like a pursuing helicopter. Bryant senses that Vincent is not all he seems and intercepts the sack of drugs that he is trying to return to its rightful owner. On the side of good is Bryant (Michelle Monaghan), an idealistic cop who is determined to root out the bad seeds in the police force. He’s so ruthless that he cuts out his own cousin’s tongue just so that it can serve as a plot device later on in the movie. The drugs are promised to Novak (Scoot McNairy), the weaselly scion of a notorious crime dynasty. It turns out that Rubino has his own reasons to worry. The boy is kidnapped as leverage Vincent is stabbed in the flank and told to return the cocaine if he wants to see his kid again. But the thieves are a pair of corrupt cops – Vincent (Foxx) and Sean (Tip ‘T.I.’ Harris) – and the owner of the drugs, casino boss Rubino (Dermot Mulroney) is the kind of man who tends to get possessive about his stash.Įven with the benefit of hindsight at the end of the film, it’s not entirely clear how the drug dealers link the theft to Vincent so quickly, but he is carjacked while grudgingly driving his 16-year-old son to football later the same day. A pair of masked men pull off the daring theft of twenty-five kilos of cocaine. An opening heist sequence sprays bullets and leaves as many questions as it does bodies. The synthetic sheen of the Las Vegas backdrop is given a grubby immediacy by camerawork that squirms and twitches. Audiences who prefer to feel a little roughed up by their action movies might show an interest, but it is doubtful that this picture will match the commercial performance of the similarly-paced and equally bloody John Wick films. Since Foxx has been absent from cinemas for three years (his last film outing was in the remake of Annie in 2014), it’s unlikely that his name will generate enough interest in this convoluted crime pic to counteract the lukewarm critical response. It’s the kind of role that an actor of Foxx’s calibre could – and does – churn out on autopilot. A Taken-style Dad rescue melds with an undercover(-or-is-he?) Narc plot, topped with relentless, thunderously overstated fight sequences. The film also pillages stylistic and thematic influences from many other, mostly superior, movies. If this rampaging, bullet-strafed blitzkrieg feels familiar, it’s not just because it is a by-the-numbers remake of Frédéric Jardin’s propulsive thriller Sleepless Night ( Nuit Blanche). ![]() Swiss director Baran bo Odar leans heavily on bone-crunching sound design and a percussive score A grimly determined Jamie Foxx goes up against a pummelling score and plot which peels so many onion layers of treachery that it appears as if the whole of the Las Vegas police department is complicit in the cocaine deal which goes south in the opening scene. ![]() 13-and-under users are offered a "view-only" experience on the app. Birthdays can't be changed once a user is signed up. What's happening: Spurred by existing and potential laws, platforms are taking pains to show they're being responsible about age-appropriate content on their sites, with varying approaches. New laws haven't spelled out exactly how to do age checks, Aaron Painter, CEO of Nametag, a digital ID verification company, told Axios: "It's left commercial companies out there saying, Alright, what do I do? Is it going to be sufficient for the law? Am I okay with someone self-consenting, or do I need to go to another level?". ![]() Companies are also concerned about having to take too much data from users to verify age, per the Financial Times. The big picture: Platforms that seek to boost their user totals have a built-in disincentive to get too rigorous about age verification: More checks means fewer users for advertisers to reach. Ly added that platforms would do better to just offer strong privacy protections by default than to seek to identify and police users based on age checks."There is a time and place for age verification, and it should be in proportion to the website's risk," Irene Ly, policy counsel at Common Sense Media, told Axios."Online, there are no waiters to check your ID and instead it has to involve some sort of technological intermediary to get a best guess of how old you are." "If you're in a restaurant and you order a drink, it's very easy for the waiter to take a quick look at your ID hand it back to you," Venzke said. The intrigue: "Age verification is something that seems like a very reasonable, very easy ask, but an online world creates all sorts of problems," Cody Venzke, senior counsel at the Center for Democracy and Technology's Equity in Civic Technology project, told Axios. Efforts to better assess users' ages may run afoul of increasing qualms over adoption of facial recognition technology and tracking of users' identities and personal data. Why it matters: Platforms are deploying age verification techniques in the absence of uniform laws or broadly accepted guidelines for how to do so without violating privacy or leaving giant loopholes. In Utah, a law that would restrict children and teens from using social media without their parents' consent - and could also bar adults who don't verify their age - is headed to the governor's desk, Axios Salt Lake City's Kim Bojórquez reports. Proposed laws in individual states take some radical approaches to checking age.Age verification and age estimation is just one part of an attempt to make tech safer for kids as complaints grow over mental health harms, privacy trespasses and more.Social media and streaming platforms are trying to figure out the best ways to verify a user's age as parents and lawmakers grow increasingly concerned about the way children and teenagers use online services.ĭriving the news: Those worries - along with recently enacted laws in the United Kingdom and California - have pushed companies to try new processes for ensuring underage users aren't getting onto sites and services meant for older people. ![]() Run the following command from your terminal: $ which python ![]() Let’s confirm that you are using brewed Python. This is the first ever publication for Arts & Graphics students and the first screen printing co-taught art medium. Through a wonderfully collaborative project, our very own Arts & Graphics students have created a Lenten Reflection Booklet for our community in order to help us “reflect” this Lenten season. So what MORE can you do this Lent? Reflect… It comes from asking – when you are tired and ready to quit – what more (magis) can I do. It comes from being open to growth and the “growing-pains” that comes with change. ![]() It comes from living our lives not for ourselves, but for and with others (and God). Many people think that Lent is all about suffering… and it IS! However, this suffering is not a punishment but a result of love. ![]() John has told us, Jesus said, “Love one another as I love you.” May our Lenten Season this year help us, with Christ, to experience the joy with Christ even through the difficulties of life. He says that condemning others can drive others away from us and Christ, but loving others can help others to experience that they are truly lovable. ![]() Pope Francis, a wonderful Jesuit, as we all are aware, is a person who has invited each of us not so much to condemn others but rather to love others. Let us remember that Jesus tells us, “dying and behold we live” and “whatever you do for others, you do to me.” It can even remind us that just as Jesus’ death led to His resurrection, also, our caring for others will not only make others happy, but, it can lead us to great joy and happiness. I also discovered that being kind and loving to others can be very sacrificial and difficult. I was also taught that Lent is a time where we, as Christians, should “give things up” (like candy or a favorite TV program, or other things that we liked) since this was a way that one could join Jesus in His suffering and death.īut, as time has passed, especially after the decrees of the Vatican Council (1962-65) were published, I began to realize that, while Lent can be a time of entering more closely into a relationship with Jesus in His passion and death, it is more importantly a time not so much of “giving things up,” but a time for “doing good things” (like being nice to my parents and brothers and sisters and friends and others). I was taught that Advent is a season when Christians prepared for the birth of Jesus, on December 25th, by celebrating with great joy. When I was a student at Creighton Prep (1951-55), on 24th and California Street here in Omaha, I was taught about the Season of Lent. ![]() The moderator will then wake certain people up.
